Sparrow
Named for Jack Sparrow's goofy walk and wild-eyed look, our Sparrow is special. He came to us as a rare owner surrender (we rarely have room for surrenders that are not emergencies) and was thought to be a little under two years old. We quickly found out he was closer to five and thought himself to be quite the man around town! We got those wings clipped quickly and he has settled down into quite the cute pasture puff. See, when Sparrow was young, someone was very rough with him and damaged the growth plates in this front legs. The end result was traumatic ringbone, leaving him unable to be ridden and with a funky gait due to lameness. We had two vets look at Sparrow to make sure that we were making the right decision and that he was not suffering. Both said if he was a full-sized horse, he would have to be put down because the weight would be too much for his feet and legs. But lucky for Sparrow, a full-sized horse he is not! We are waiting for his bones to finish fusing, which will help a great deal with his lameness and any pain. He is given Devil's Claw daily for any discomfort and bute on days when he has played too hard or feels sore. He also has some tooth issues we are working to address. Our hope is for Sparrow to find a home of his own where he can be a companion horse to another horse or horses. He absolutely cannot be ridden, not even by children and will need farrier visits like clockwork every 5-6 weeks to keep him comfortable. He is smart, sweet, and loves attention. He is currently a companion to Milo, a young foal at the rescue. If you are possibly interested in adopting Sparrow, there is a button at the bottom of the page that links to our adoption application and contract.
We have put together a few wish lists for Christmas. The lists have a variety of items that will be useful to making Sparrow happy, healthy, and comfortable. He (and we!) would greatly appreciate any item or items you wish to donate. Items from tractor supply can be ordered online for pickup at the Hattiesburg store under the name Miranda Swilley. Or, if you wish to bring them directly, please let us know by emailing us at [email protected]. If you prefer to use Chewy, there are a lot of great items on there that would be greatly appreciated.
