About Us
Our rescue started its 501c3 status in 2016 as Homeward Horse and Hound of Mississippi. During that time, we were working primarily with abandoned hunting dogs with the odd horse here and there. As much as we love the hounds, our path over the years has led us to working almost exclusively with horses. To shorten a long story, while there is always a need for dog rescue, the horses in our area need us more. In 2022, after several years of trying to figure out how to continue to take in dogs while juggling the ever-increasing number of horses, we made the decision to adjust our name and mission to more accurately reflect the direction our organization is headed. We felt keeping the Hound in our name was misleading and wanted to avoid confusion in the future. We are a small nonprofit organization with no paid employees, and we work closely with our local law enforcement when they need assistance with equine welfare calls. We attempt to intervene with education and assistance before the situation gets out of hand, facilitate and negotiate owner surrenders when there is a need, and provide evidence should law enforcement pursue charges. When we started, we wanted to focus on the horses in our community who, without intervention, would likely die where they stood, relying on the public to see and report them. The horses whose owners can't or won't provide for them, and cannot or will not give them away, sell them, send them to auction, or put them down. The ones who are hidden in plain sight in overgrown fields, tiny lots, backyards, and behind broken fences. Narrowing our focus to those who need us most right here in our community keeps us small enough to be able to give our full attention to each horse that enters our gates and allows us to operate without paid employees so that all the donations that come in go to the care and upkeep of the horses in our care.
